There are some interesting things about New Zealand that I have taken note of that I would like to share.
- The outlets have switches that need to be turned on.
- The Dining Hall has specific hours for meals instead of just being open all day 😦
- Ketchup is called tomato sauce. So is tomato sauce.
- Greenhouses are also called glasshouses.
- Tater tots are hash-browns.
- The windows do not have screens because of a perceived lack of bugs (lies!). Also, no snakes (hopefully not a lie?).
- Summer is in the months of December, January, and February. Still trippy.
- A lot of Kiwis believe New Zealand is a “shit-hole”. For the record, it is not.
- Classes are called papers.
- Most of the music and movies/tv shows they watch come from America. Makes sense, but I never thought about it.
- Kiwi students don’t have to pay interest on their loans unless they leave New Zealand to live elsewhere.
- Donald Trump unfailingly comes up in conversation when you say you’re from America. Even if you don’t.
- Mochas are called moccachinos, and lattes are flat whites, but there are also lattes.
- There is a rivalry between New Zealand and Australia. Who knew?
- They nickel and dime it here. Case in point, I have to pay for internet and printing.
- Who ever said Kiwis don’t like to party and drink are very, very wrong.
- Kia Ora is Maori for a lot of things, such as hello, thank you, etc.
- They drive on the left side of the road. I already knew this, but it still freaks me out, and crossing the road has become a problem of itself.
- New Zealand is trying to decide is they want to redo their flag to show their independence from Britain.
- New Zealand is not independent from Britain. All laws have to be approved by the crown.
- The emergency number here is 111.
- Earthquakes are the main danger here.
- Kiwis can tell you’re an American within the first 3 seconds of conversation. How embarrassing.
- The candy is different here too. They call candy “lollies” and one of the favorites are pineapple lumps, which are chewy pineapple flavor covered in chocolate. I have no feelings about this candy.
- That’s all I can think of off the top of my head, but more to come!
